NY Taxi Information
If you've never hailed a taxi before, just stand at the street and hold your hand straight up above your head like a kid in class. Look for a Yellow Cab with its numbers sign lit up on the roof. They'll pick you up.
Taxi Tips
- There are more than 10,000 taxis in the greater New York area.
- The cheapest Taxi will cost you about $4 + tip for a few blocks.
- They'll charge you for every 1/5 mile which equates to about 4 city blocks.
- They will charge around 40-50 cents per minute for idle time.
- There are some minor surcharges for cab rides depending on the time of day.
- Cabs aren't supposed to take more than 4 people at once.
- Extra passengers are free. You only pay one cab fare.
- Drivers expect 15-20% tips.
- Don't get into a car that is not obviously a taxi. There are "gypsy cabs" that may rip you off or even rob you.
